Vollenhoven

Dirk Hendrik Theodoor Vollenhoven (1892–1978) was a Dutch Reformed philosopher and theologian. He co-founded Reformational (Calvinistic) philosophy alongside his brother-in-law Herman Dooyeweerd. Born on November 1, 1892, in Amsterdam to Dirk Hendrik Vollenhoven, a customs telegraph officer, and Catharina Pruijs, he studied classics, philosophy, and theology at the Free University of Amsterdam from 1911, earning his PhD cum laude in 1918 with a dissertation on theistic philosophy of mathematics.

Ordained as a pastor in the Gereformeerde Kerk, he served in Oostkapelle (1918–1921) and The Hague (1921–1926), while deepening his philosophical pursuits, including studies in psychology in Leipzig. In 1926, he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Free University, where he taught until his retirement in 1963, covering history of philosophy, logic, and systematic philosophy. He developed the Consistent Problem-Historical Method for analyzing philosophical thought and co-founded the Association for Calvinistic Philosophy in 1935.

Vollenhoven married Hermina Maria Dooyeweerd in 1918; they had five children. He died in Amsterdam on June 6, 1978.
